The Gary Legacy
From the steel-forged streets that raised Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, to electing Richard Hatcher as one of America's first Black mayors, Gary ignited a movement. In 1972, it hosted the landmark National Black Political Convention, uniting thousands to shape Black America's future. Today, a thriving cultural ecosystem keeps that legacy alive and evolving.
The Gary International Black Film Festival honors this heritage by transforming our hometown into a beacon for independent Black cinema. We bring world-class storytelling to our community and take our community's stories to the world.
