    Why GIBFF Matters

    Storytelling Builds Stronger Communities.

Independent Black cinema is more than entertainment—it is a vital cultural record. The Gary International Black Film Festival was created to ensure that our stories, in all their complexity, beauty, and truth, are celebrated on the big screen.

By bringing world-class films to Gary, Indiana, we honor a city that has always been a beacon of Black artistry. GIBFF is a space where filmmakers find their audience, where youth discover their voices, and where a community comes together to be inspired.

    Our Journey

    A History of Excellence

    2011

    The Festival is Founded

The Gary International Black Film Festival (GIBFF) was born out of a desire to bring world-class independent Black cinema to our hometown. We set out to create a platform that honors Gary's rich cultural legacy while amplifying emerging Black voices. In February of 2011, we rented the Glen Theater and launched the inaugural Gary International Black Film Festival
