SUMMER. THROWBACK. CHILLIN. OUTSIDE.

This summer, the festival organizers bring the opportunity to see a variety of “throwback” films investigating the power and significance of Black exploitation films in a variety of Gary venues throughout the summer. This genre of filmmaking, which came on the heels of the civil rights era and into the Black power movement, portrayed Black protagonists in a new light. No longer docile and servile slaves, but as empowered and self sufficient leaders addressing many of the social ills created by systemic racism. Though controversial because of its exaggerated depictions of violence, sex, and drug-use, the Blaxploitation film genre in many ways reflected the successes of the Civil Rights movement and the attitudes of the Black Power movement.

Beginning in May and running throughout the summer, this series will take place at a variety of venues with both indoor and outdoor opportunities to view films.

Attempting to be a bridge builder in a time of extreme polarization takes Van and a coalition of unlikely allies deep into the inner workings of a divisive administration, internal debates within both parties, and the lives of frontline activists fighting for their communities.

Join Producer Lance Kramer, Nicky Ali Jackson, PH. D and Timothy McDonald in a powerful discussion around criminal justice reform and the fight for exoneration.
